Timor Leste Primary 4 Curriculum - Portuguese

The official Timor Leste primary curriculum document from 2014 provides details about the Portuguese language curriculum, among other subjects. Portuguese literacy is taught alongside Tetum literacy, with an emphasis on building a strong foundation in both official languages by the end of Primary 6. The curriculum prioritizes an inclusive and relevant learning experience, connecting with Timorese culture and promoting holistic development. It emphasizes active learning, integrating literacy skills across all subjects, and fostering positive classroom management practices.

Specifically, the Portuguese literacy curriculum for Primary 4 focuses on developing the following skills:

  • Listening and Speaking: Communicating independently about activities in and out of school; actively participating in classroom discussions; using language creatively to communicate information and ideas; asking and answering higher-level questions; appreciating traditional Timorese literature; asking relevant questions to comprehend complex oral texts; using age-appropriate vocabulary and grammar correctly for various communicative purposes; using knowledge of letter-sound relationships for correct pronunciation.
  • Reading: Employing various strategies to read, comprehend, and discuss longer texts; reading for pleasure; using various strategies to understand grade-level texts; reading aloud with confidence; expanding decoding skills for new vocabulary encountered in printed materials; improving reading fluency for longer texts.
  • Writing: Creating more complex texts for school tasks; writing creatively and confidently on various topics; writing confidently to communicate knowledge and information; writing clearly using cursive script; using correct formatting for different writing purposes.

The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of assessment as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers are encouraged to use both formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and inform future instruction. For Primary 1 and 2, a descriptive grading system is used, while a numerical system (1-10) is implemented from Primary 3 onwards, along with end-of-year exams.
