Togo Cours Préparatoire 1ère année (CP1) Subjects - Languages
French
French is the official language of instruction in Togo. In CP1 (Cours Préparatoire 1ère année), the first year of primary school, French language instruction focuses on developing foundational literacy skills – reading, writing, speaking, and listening. A key resource used in CP1 French classes is the textbook Le Flamboyant. This textbook series, based on the principle of a single French book, is widely adopted in several countries. Le Flamboyant promotes an active and innovative learning approach, integrating reading, speaking, and writing skills. Textbooks for both CP1 and CP2 aim to facilitate the combined acquisition of these essential language skills. Distribution of French and mathematics textbooks to CP1 students has been an area of focus for improving education in Togo. Studies have shown that learning outcomes in Togo tend to be better in French than in math.
Other Languages
While French is the primary language of instruction, other languages are present in the Togolese education system. For example, some teachers in early primary grades may speak the indigenous language Ewe, while their students speak Kabye. This multilingual context can present challenges for language instruction. Further research is needed to determine the extent to which other languages are incorporated into the formal CP1 curriculum. |
