Togo Secondary School Subjects - Educational Technology

Initiatives and Projects

  • National Strategy for Educational Resources: Togo has a national strategy to improve access to educational resources like textbooks and teaching aids.
  • School Results Publication via WhatsApp Chatbot: In June 2024, Togo launched a WhatsApp chatbot linked to a DHIS2 database to allow students to access exam results easily and affordably. This initiative addressed previous challenges with manual consultation, SMS congestion, and cost.
  • School NET (School of the New Era of Technology): This project, initiated by the École, Avenir Sûr (E.A.S) Association, aims to reduce the digital divide by establishing computer labs and digital libraries in targeted public general education high schools, starting with Lycée de Tsévié I in the Maritime Region.
  • Integration of ICTs: The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is collaborating with Togolese authorities to integrate ICTs into the education system. This aligns with the government's education strategy (2014-2025), which emphasizes improving education system management through a reliable information system.
  • DHIS2 Implementation: In 2021, Togo implemented DHIS2 in conjunction with the StatEduc application for collecting and processing data from all 16,000 pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools.
  • National Policy for ICT Integration: In April 2021, the Togolese government began developing a national policy to integrate ICTs into the education sector.

Challenges and Opportunities

  • Educational Challenges: Togo's education sector faces challenges such as underfunding, impacting resources, teacher salaries, and infrastructure. Low access and equity, particularly in rural areas, along with low secondary school completion rates and literacy program coverage, are also persistent issues.
  • Digital Divide: Initiatives like School NET highlight the need to address the digital divide and promote computer literacy.
  • Human Capital Development: There's a recognized need to develop human capital by incorporating training in digital tools and skills at all levels of education.
  • Data Management and Analysis: The implementation of DHIS2 and the use of data for decision-making, as seen in the Data Must Speak initiative, are crucial for improving the education system.
