The Tongan education system is overseen by the Ministry of Education and Training (MET). Education is compulsory from ages 4 to 18 and is divided into four stages: Early Childhood (2 years), Primary (6 years), Secondary (7 years), and Post-Secondary. There are approximately 95 primary schools (including pre-schools), 22 high schools, and around 20 higher education institutions. Many secondary schools are operated by missionaries. The Tonga School Certificate is awarded after Grade 11. Tonga has been working with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to improve literacy and numeracy, particularly for boys, children from poorer families, and children with disabilities. While the specific details of the Form 1 Tongan Studies syllabus remain elusive, the available information suggests a focus on Tongan language and culture.
