Tonga Form 6 Curriculum - Geography

This Geography course is designed for students who may pursue further studies in Geography or complete their formal education after Form 7. It aims to develop an understanding of the geographic environment as the home of people.

Course Aims:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of a geographic environment in the Pacific, focusing on interacting natural processes. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of a cultural process operating within geographic environments at the local, national, or global level. 3. Apply geographic skills, concepts, and ideas in both known and unknown contexts during research and interpretation. 4. Analyze aspects of contemporary geographic issues in the Pacific context. 5. Analyze aspects of a geographic topic at a global scale. 6. Develop skills of independent research in the field with consultation.

Content Components:

The course content is organized under four strands:

  • Strand 1: Natural Processes in a Geographic Environment in the Pacific: This strand focuses on the different natural processes operating in the Pacific, the impact of human actions on these processes, and requires students to create a geographical presentation on an environmental concern in the Blue Pacific region.
  • Strand 2: Cultural Processes in a Local, National or Global Geographic Environment: This strand examines different cultural processes operating within various geographic environments and their impacts on people and the environment.
  • Strand 3: Application of Geographic Skills, Concepts and Ideas: This strand covers a range of geographic skills, including map reading, graph interpretation, data analysis, and the application of these skills in geographical inquiries.
  • Strand 4: Consultative Practical Research - Contemporary Geographic Issues in the Pacific and at the Global Level: This strand involves conducting independent research on a contemporary geographic issue, with consultation, and communicating key research findings, including possible solutions.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through a three-hour written examination (70%) covering Strands 1, 2, and 3, and internal assessment (30%) on Strands 1 and 4. The internal assessment consists of two tasks: a geographical presentation (10%) and a consultative practical research report (20%).
