Turkey Lise 12th Grade Curriculum - First Foreign Language (English)

This curriculum aligns with the B2 and B2+ levels (Independent User) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The primary focus is developing students' ability to express themselves comfortably and effectively in speaking and discussion settings. The curriculum integrates all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), emphasizing effective oral and written communication in diverse contexts. Communicative and task-based activities, along with project work, are frequently employed to create an engaging and enjoyable learning experience. The curriculum considers the characteristics of students transitioning from adolescence to adulthood.

General Learning Objectives (B2 and B2+ CEFR Levels):

  • B2 (Independent User): Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
  • B2+ (Independent User): Can keep up with an animated discussion, identifying implicit meanings and responding effectively. Can contribute skillfully to the conversation, using appropriate discourse markers to connect ideas and maintain coherence. Can develop a clear argument, emphasizing salient points and providing relevant details.

Curriculum Structure:

The curriculum is organized into 10 thematic units, each focusing on specific functions, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation points, while integrating all four language skills. The themes are designed to be relevant to students' interests and experiences. Each lesson introduces a maximum of seven new vocabulary items to ensure meaningful learning and active use. The curriculum promotes communicative, experiential, and task-based language activities. It is designed for four English lesson hours per week, with flexibility for adaptation by schools offering different time allocations.

Assessment and Evaluation:

Assessment is a blend of alternative, traditional, and electronic methods, emphasizing communicative tasks and language production. Assessment types include:

  • Discussion Time: Evaluating listening and speaking skills through discussions and debates on student-selected topics.
  • Video Blogs (V-logs): Assessing speaking skills through individual or interview-style vlogs on unit themes or personal interests.
  • Tech Pack: Utilizing an online environment for supplementary materials, interactive practice, and assessment of all four skills, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
  • E-Portfolios: Collecting student work, including projects, writing samples, vlogs, teacher feedback, and multimedia creations, for comprehensive assessment.
  • Pen-and-Paper Exams: Traditional assessments for evaluating integrated skills and language components.

Feedback is provided from multiple sources, including teachers, peers, e-assessment tools, parents, and self-evaluation.

Use of Technology and Blended Learning:

The curriculum encourages the integration of technology and blended learning, recognizing the importance of technology in students' lives. It advocates for a learning environment that combines face-to-face instruction with approximately 45% online materials and activities. Topics such as netiquette, responsible technology use, and online communication are addressed within the themes. Suggested multimedia and online resources include movies, documentaries, podcasts, blogs, wikis, simulations, virtual environments, and interactive games. Offline materials are also provided to accommodate limited internet access.
