Turkey 3rd Grade Curriculum - Turkish Language

The Turkish Language and Turkish Culture Course Curriculum for grades 1-8, published by the Turkish Ministry of National Education in 2018, serves as the primary guide for Turkish language instruction for 3rd grade students in Turkey.

Curriculum Goals:

The curriculum emphasizes the development of four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It also aims to instill an appreciation for Turkish culture and foster intercultural communication skills.

3rd Grade Specific Learning Outcomes:

  • Listening/Monitoring: Students should be able to summarize short passages, identify main ideas, predict the meaning of words, recognize basic vocabulary, follow multi-step instructions, and express thoughts about what they have heard. They begin to develop skills in distinguishing Turkish sounds and letters.
  • Speaking: Students should be able to use grade-appropriate vocabulary, engage in dialogues, express opinions, arrange events in order, use intonation and stress, speak publicly on a topic, and use non-verbal communication skills. Correct pronunciation of Turkish sounds is emphasized.
  • Reading: Students should be able to read punctuation, pay attention to stress and intonation while reading, find the meaning of unknown words using context and synonyms/antonyms, outline passages, distinguish between real and imaginary elements, and identify the topic of a text. They continue to develop skills in recognizing letters, understanding letter-sound relationships, and reading syllables, words, and short texts.
  • Writing: Students should be able to use vocabulary correctly, write short texts on a given subject, choose appropriate titles, write simple instructions, and adhere to spelling and punctuation rules. They continue to develop skills in writing letters, syllables, words, and meaningful sentences.

Cultural Themes:

The curriculum incorporates eight cultural themes, presented through sub-themes that increase in complexity with each grade level. The themes for 3rd grade include:
