Turkey Primary School Level 2 (5th Grade) Curriculum - Turkish Language

The Turkish Language and Turkish Culture Course Curriculum aims to develop Turkish language skills and cultural understanding in Turkish children living abroad. The curriculum focuses on listening/monitoring, speaking, reading, and writing skills, incorporating cultural themes and sub-themes.

Learning Outcomes for 5th Grade:

  • Listening/Monitoring: Students should be able to identify main ideas and mood, summarize texts (focused on incidents), make inferences based on elements within the text, detect non-verbal messages (body language), and use listening strategies (participatory listening).
  • Speaking: Students should be able to use grade-appropriate vocabulary correctly, engage in dialogues, express opinions, give prepared and impromptu speeches, organize speech around a theme, use transitions and conjunctions, and use non-verbal communication skills (body language).
  • Reading: Students should be able to use reading strategies, understand vocabulary elements (words, idioms, proverbs, reduplication), find the meaning of homonyms, summarize texts (incidents), identify the topic and main ideas/mood, evaluate media texts, make comparisons between texts (narrative), distinguish between real and imaginary elements, make inferences, and distinguish between different text types (tale, story, fable).
  • Writing: Students should be able to use vocabulary elements properly, write texts about a topic (narrative and informative), organize writing around a theme, use transitions and conjunctions, choose appropriate titles, adhere to spelling and punctuation rules (mistyped words and quotation marks), fill in forms according to instructions, and use writing strategies.

Cultural Themes and Sub-themes for 5th Grade:

The curriculum incorporates cultural themes and sub-themes, designed spirally with increasing difficulty across grade levels. The themes are listed below, with recommended ranking for textbook preparation:

1. Me and My Family: Family history, solidarity, migration, absence from home, fellow citizen, consulate, home country, choice of profession, native land, social assistance. 2. Surrounding Society, Differences and Living Together: Agreement, different languages and cultures, equality, migration, human rights, intercultural communication, interculturality, respect, ways of recognition, harmony. 3. Games and Entertainment: Riddles, digital games, folk dances by regions, playgrounds, hobbies, songs, folk songs. 4. Holidays and Celebrations: Religious and national holidays, customs and traditions, blessed nights, liberation days. 5. Let's Travel and See: Cities, historical and touristic places, Turkey, cultural venues. 6. A Door to the Past: Heroes of history, Turks and Turkish culture from the eyes of famous Europeans, establishment of the Republic of Turkey. 7. Arts and Literature: Examples of Turkish architecture in the world, Turkish literature, poets, and writers. 8. Human and Nature: Food chain, plant species, living things and their rights, environment, environment-dependent food cultures, animal species.
