Turkey 4th Grade Science Curriculum
This information is based on the 2019-2020 curriculum.
Unit 4: Properties of Matter / Matter and Nature
- Pure Substances and Mixtures: Students classify commonly used materials as pure substances or mixtures, explaining the differences between them. They also select appropriate methods for separating mixtures encountered in everyday life, focusing on filtration, sieving, and magnetic separation.
Unit 5: Lighting and Sound Technologies / Physical Events
- Lighting Technologies: Students compare lighting tools used in the past and present, emphasizing the impact of technology on the development of lighting tools and their importance in our lives. They also design lighting tools that could be used in the future.
- Appropriate Lighting: Students research appropriate lighting, focusing on its importance for eye health.
- Light Pollution: Students investigate the causes of light pollution and explain its negative effects on wildlife and the observation of celestial bodies. They also develop solutions to reduce light pollution.
- Sound Technologies From Past to Present: Students compare sound technologies used in the past and present, highlighting the role of technology in their development.
- Noise Pollution: Students explore the causes and effects of noise pollution on human health and the environment, and propose solutions for reducing noise pollution. They also research the positive and negative impacts of technological devices with loud sounds.
Unit 6: Humans and the Environment / Living Things and Life
- Conscious Consumer: Students learn to be mindful of resource consumption, emphasizing the importance of conserving resources like electricity, water, and food. The importance of reuse is also highlighted.
Unit 7: Simple Electric Circuits / Physical Events
- Simple Electric Circuits: Students identify the components of a simple electric circuit and their functions (battery, bulb, wire, and switch). They build a working electric circuit using a battery, bulb, and switch, and learn that electrical switches and wires in homes and schools are also circuit components. The presence of connecting wires inside walls between electrical switches and lamps is emphasized.
Additional Information:
- The curriculum also covers science process skills, science-technology-society-environment connections, and attitudes and values, which are integrated throughout the units.
