Tuvalu Education System Overview
Tuvalu's education system consists of primary and secondary education. Primary education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 15. Each island has a primary school. There are twelve primary schools in total, nine public and three private denominational schools.
Secondary education is offered for five years (Years 9-13) at two schools:
- Motufoua Secondary School: Located on Vaitupu atoll, this is the largest secondary school in Tuvalu and operates as a boarding school.
- Fetuvalu Secondary School: A day school located on Funafuti atoll, operated by the Church of Tuvalu.
While the specific Form 2 Economics curriculum was not found, some sources indicate that Economics is offered as a subject in secondary schools. The Tuvalu Education Strategic Plan outlines the government's commitment to providing eight years of primary education, two years of junior secondary, and three years of secondary education.
A significant challenge for Tuvalu's education system is the transition from primary to secondary education, with over 30% of children not continuing to secondary school. The upper secondary completion rate is around 50%. |
