Tuvalu Primary School Curriculum

Primary education in Tuvalu is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 15. Each of the islands has a primary school. While the primary completion rate is high (95%), a significant number of students (over 30%) do not transition to secondary education.

Primary School Subjects

The core subjects taught in Tuvaluan primary schools (Years 1-8) include:

  • English: English is introduced to children in school and is spoken at all levels of education.
  • Mathematics
  • Social Science
  • Basic Science

Additional Information:

  • There are twelve primary schools in Tuvalu, nine public and three private.
  • A Technical and Vocational Skills Development (TVSD) pathway is available as an alternative to the general academic pathway. Eight new courses have been developed for this pathway, including Painting, Sewing, Working with Concrete, Horticulture, Life Skills, English, Maths & Ethics.
