Tuvalu Primary School Social Science Curriculum

The social science curriculum in Tuvaluan primary schools aims to develop students' knowledge of Tuvalu and its place in the world. It covers topics such as culture and heritage, and incorporates traditional activities like food preparation and customs to teach core values. Outcome-based curriculum is implemented in English, mathematics, and basic science and social science for Year 8. Additional subjects offered include Business Studies, Art & Craft, and Physical Education. Technical and vocational skills development (TVSD) is also integrated into the curriculum for Years 7 and 8.

The Tuvalu National Curriculum Policy Framework guides the development and implementation of the curriculum. There are concerns about the alignment of the curricula for Years 1-13 with this framework. A key aspect of the framework is the promotion of gender-sensitive curriculum materials and classroom management. Resources for teachers are available to support the integration of social studies and science learning objectives. One example is the use of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) program, which provides lesson plans and resources connected to curricular learning objectives.
