Uganda Primary 4 Curriculum - English

This curriculum is designed to transition Primary 4 learners from thematic learning to subject-based learning, with a growing emphasis on English as the medium of instruction. The curriculum revisits previously learned concepts while introducing new material.

Term I

  • Describing People and Objects: This topic focuses on developing vocabulary and structures to describe people and objects, both orally and in writing. Subtopics include describing people (using the present tense, comparing appearances, and describing behavior), and describing objects (using present tense, comparing objects based on size, shape, color, and texture). Activities include role-playing, storytelling, picture matching, and writing descriptive sentences and paragraphs.
  • Giving Directions: This topic covers vocabulary and structures related to giving and following directions. Learners will describe familiar places, give directions, estimate distances, and interpret simple maps. Activities include role-playing, map reading, and writing directions.
  • What I Like and How I Feel: This topic builds on previous learning about likes and dislikes, focusing on expressing preferences and feelings using the present tense. Learners will give reasons for their likes, identify and respond to others' feelings, and write simple texts about likes and feelings. Activities include discussions, role-playing, and writing letters.

Term II

  • Behavior: This topic develops vocabulary and structures related to good and bad behavior. Learners will use courteous language, express gratitude, ask and answer questions about behavior, and discuss the effects of bad behavior. Activities include role-playing, discussions, and writing stories.
  • Shopping: This topic introduces functional language related to shopping, building on previous learning about measurement. Learners will identify items in a shop, use appropriate vocabulary and structures during shopping, categorize items, identify units used in shopping, read price lists, and write simple texts related to shopping. Activities include shopping games, creating shopping lists, and writing texts.
  • Time: This topic consolidates previous learning about the past simple tense and introduces other forms, including the past continuous tense. Learners will ask and answer questions about past events, report on past events, and write short texts using past tense forms. Activities include narrating events, acting conversations, and writing stories.

Term III

  • Expression of the Future: This topic introduces the future tense, using "shall" and "will." Learners will talk about future events, explain what will happen, respond to questions, narrate future events, read and write plans, and keep a diary. Activities include role-playing, discussions, writing personal plans, and keeping a class diary.
  • Democracy: This topic develops vocabulary and structures related to democratic activities, such as elections, games and sports, and music, dance, and drama. Learners will use appropriate language to express appreciation, make comments, note main points, and answer questions. Activities include role-playing elections, conducting conversations, narrating stories, reading and interpreting posters, and writing campaign messages.
