Uganda Primary 4 Mathematics Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the learning objectives, topics, and suggested activities for Primary 4 Mathematics in Uganda. It aims to equip learners with fundamental mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. The curriculum is organized into themes, topics, and sub-topics, with suggested periods allocated for each.

Term I

  • Theme 1: Sets (8 periods)
      • Set Concepts: Introduction to basic set concepts, including members, empty sets, and equivalent sets. Emphasis on mathematical vocabulary like 'member', 'empty', and 'equivalent'.
  • Theme 2: Numeracy
      • Whole Numbers (20 periods): Understanding whole numbers up to 100,000, including place value (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones). Activities may include number charts, games, and practical applications.
      • Operations on Whole Numbers (20 periods): Covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. Includes practical problem-solving and activities like number spiders and games.
      • Patterns and Sequences (12 periods): Identifying and creating patterns and sequences using numbers and simple shapes. Focuses on using English language orally and in written form to describe patterns and sequences.

Term II

  • Theme 2: Numeracy
      • Fractions (24 periods): Introduction to fractions, including equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and simple operations with fractions. Use of practical examples and activities.
  • Theme 3: Geometry
      • 2-Dimensional Geometry (18 periods): Exploring 2D shapes, their properties, perimeter, and area. Activities may include drawing, measuring, and comparing shapes.
      • 3-Dimensional Geometry (8 periods): Introduction to 3D shapes and their properties. Activities may involve using concrete materials to build and explore 3D shapes.
  • Theme 4: Interpretation of Graphs and Data
      • Data Handling (12 periods): Collecting, representing, and interpreting data using simple graphs and charts.

Term III

  • Theme 5: Measurement
      • Money (16 periods): Understanding money, including different denominations, converting between units, and performing calculations involving money. Practical activities like shopping scenarios.
      • Time (16 periods): Telling time, converting between units of time (hours, minutes, seconds), and solving problems involving time.
      • Length, Mass, Capacity (20 periods): Measuring and comparing length, mass, and capacity using appropriate units. Practical activities using various measuring tools.
  • Theme 6: Algebra
      • Equations (8 periods): Introduction to simple equations without letters, focusing on solving for unknowns using basic operations.

This curriculum emphasizes practical activities, problem-solving, and the integration of language skills in mathematics learning. It encourages learners to explore mathematical concepts through real-life examples and hands-on activities.
