Uganda Primary 4 Integrated Science Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the topics covered in the Integrated Science subject for Primary 4 students in Uganda. It is based on the syllabus provided by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).

Term I

  • Theme: World of Living Things
    • Topic 1: Plant Life
      • Sub-topics covered include various aspects of plant life, such as parts of a plant, their functions, types of plants, and their needs for growth. The syllabus emphasizes practical activities and observations to enhance understanding.
    • Topic 2: Growing Crops
      • This topic introduces students to different types of crops, including perennial and annual crops. It covers the processes involved in crop cultivation, from planting to harvesting, and the importance of agriculture.
  • Theme: Our Environment
    • Topic 3: Weather Changes Around Us
      • This topic focuses on observable weather changes and their impact on the environment. It includes a simplified study of rain formation and how weather and climate affect daily life.
  • Theme: Human Health
    • Topic 4: Personal Hygiene
      • Building on prior knowledge, this topic reinforces the importance of personal hygiene practices for maintaining good health. It covers various aspects of cleanliness, including handwashing, bathing, and oral hygiene.

Term II

  • Theme: Human Health
    • Topic 1: Our Food
      • This topic explores different types of food, their nutritional value, and the importance of a balanced diet. It also covers food preservation methods and safe food handling practices.
  • Theme: Human Body
    • Topic 2: Human Body Organs
      • Students learn about the major organs of the human body, their functions, and how they work together. Practical activities, such as labeling diagrams, are encouraged.
    • Topic 3: The Teeth
      • This topic focuses on the structure and function of teeth, the importance of dental hygiene, and common dental problems.
  • Theme: Human Health
    • Topic 4: Sanitation
      • This topic covers the importance of sanitation for maintaining a healthy environment. It includes proper waste disposal methods, hygiene in the home and community, and the prevention of diseases.

Term III

  • Theme: Human Health
    • Topic 1: Communicable Intestinal Diseases & Worm Infestation
      • This topic introduces students to common intestinal diseases and worm infestations, their causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment.
    • Topic 2: Vectors and Diseases
      • Students learn about disease vectors, such as mosquitoes and flies, and how they transmit diseases. Emphasis is placed on preventive measures, such as using mosquito nets and maintaining cleanliness.
    • Topic 3: Accidents, Poisoning, and First Aid
      • This topic covers common accidents and poisoning, their prevention, and basic first aid procedures.
  • Theme: Science in Human Activities and Occupations
    • Topic 4: Keeping Rabbits
      • This topic introduces students to the practical aspects of raising rabbits, including their housing, feeding, and health care. It also touches upon the economic benefits of rabbit keeping.
