Uganda Primary 1 Physical Education Curriculum

This curriculum focuses on developing basic movement skills, body awareness, and a positive attitude towards physical activity. It emphasizes learning through action, observation, and play. Traditional games and dances are incorporated to promote cultural appreciation and enjoyment of movement. The curriculum is designed to be learner-centered, encouraging active participation and catering to diverse learning styles.

Term 1

  • Orientation Week: Introduction to Physical Education, including play activities, classroom organization, appropriate attire, and exploration of play areas and resources.
  • Traditional Games (Weeks 2-4): Focus on imitative games, developing skills such as running in formations, walking, jumping, dancing, twisting, and sharing play materials.
  • Body Movement and Space Awareness (Weeks 5-7): Exploration of basic body movements (locomotor and non-locomotor), manipulative activities, and spatial awareness using climbing frames and soft objects.
  • Traditional Games (Weeks 8-10): Imitative movements based on animals, work activities, and natural happenings.
  • Games for Lower Primary (Weeks 11-13): Introduction to simple games, including reaction games, imitative games, running/chasing games, and cooperative games with balls. Emphasis on following rules and enthusiastic participation.

Term 2

  • Traditional Games (Weeks 1-3): Imitative movements focusing on crawling, creeping, lifting, carrying, walking, running, balancing, rolling, climbing, and following instructions.
  • Traditional Games (Weeks 4-6): Body and space awareness activities, including jumping, running in patterns, skipping, hopping, throwing, and catching.
  • Games for Lower Primary (Weeks 7-9): Simple games involving imitation, running, chasing, reacting, and cooperation. Focus on skill development, following rules, and creative play.
  • Traditional Games (Weeks 10-12): Animal-like movements (snake, cow, cat, etc.), crawling, and following game rules.

Term 3

  • Basic Movement Experiences (Weeks 1-3): Pulling, pushing, bending, stretching, sliding, carrying, twisting, turning, and following instructions.
  • Games for Lower Primary (Weeks 4-6): Imitation games, reaction games, running/chasing games, and cooperative games. Skills include bouncing balls, running with varied speed and distance, balancing, throwing, and aiming.
  • Traditional Games (Weeks 7-9): Imitative movements related to work, animals, and natural happenings, with a focus on pushing, pulling, throwing, catching, jumping, lifting, and timing movements.
  • Games for Lower Primary (Weeks 10-12): Reaction games, imitation games, running/chasing games, and cooperative games. Emphasis on skill performance, following rules, and enthusiastic movement.

This curriculum also includes safety precautions and first aid procedures relevant to physical activities.
