Uganda Primary 7 Curriculum - Local Language

The Local Language component of the Uganda Primary 7 curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in their local languages. The curriculum emphasizes literacy and oracy skills, enabling students to effectively communicate in their mother tongues. While the specific local language taught varies depending on the region and school, the curriculum aims to equip students with essential language skills applicable to any local language.

The choice of local language is decided by stakeholders in the locality and school authorities. This localized approach ensures the relevance and cultural appropriateness of the language education.

While English is the official language of instruction from Primary 4 onwards, local languages play a crucial role in the early years of primary education (P1-P3). This approach recognizes the importance of mother-tongue literacy in supporting overall learning and cognitive development.

Some of the local languages used in Ugandan primary schools include Acholi, Luganda, Ateso, Runyankole, Rukiga, and Lango. Other languages spoken in Uganda that may be included in local language curricula are Lugbara, Karamojong, Lusoga, Lumasaaba, Runyoro-Rutooro, and more.

The emphasis on local language instruction aims to improve literacy levels and promote cultural preservation. The curriculum seeks to empower students to become proficient in both their local language and English, fostering effective communication and academic success.
