Uganda Primary 3 English Curriculum

Term I

  • Theme 1: Our Sub-County/Division: This theme introduces vocabulary related to locations, directions, and features within the child's local area. Students learn to describe their surroundings, give directions, and draw simple maps. Grammar focus includes prepositions of place (on, in, behind, etc.) and question words (where, what). Activities may involve map drawing, describing journeys, and identifying landmarks. ,
  • Theme 2: Livelihoods in Our Sub-County/Division: This theme explores different occupations and economic activities within the community. Students learn vocabulary related to jobs, tools, and daily routines. Grammar focus includes present tense verbs and descriptions of work. Activities may involve role-playing different jobs, interviewing community members, and writing about daily work routines.
  • Theme 3: Our Environment (I): This theme focuses on the natural environment, including soil, plants, and animals. Students learn vocabulary related to environmental features and processes. Grammar focus includes past tense verbs and descriptions of changes. Activities may involve observing and recording environmental changes, writing about the past, and discussing the importance of environmental protection.
  • Theme 4: Our Environment and Weather: This theme explores weather patterns and their impact on the environment. Students learn vocabulary related to weather conditions, forecasting, and climate. Grammar focus includes future tense verbs and making predictions. Activities may involve creating weather charts, discussing weather patterns, and writing about future weather conditions.

Term II

  • Theme 5: Living Things: This theme introduces vocabulary related to animals, birds, and insects, focusing on their characteristics, habitats, and life cycles. Grammar focus includes present perfect tense and possessive pronouns. Activities may involve observing and describing animals, writing animal stories, and discussing animal care.
  • Theme 6: Plants: This theme explores the plant kingdom, focusing on different types of plants, their parts, and their functions. Grammar focus includes past tense verbs and adjectives. Activities may involve conducting plant experiments, labeling plant diagrams, and writing about plant care.
  • Theme 7: Managing Our Resources: This theme introduces vocabulary related to resources, money, and budgeting. Grammar focus includes future tense verbs and plurals. Activities may involve creating budgets, role-playing buying and selling, and writing about saving money.
  • Theme 8: Keeping Peace in Our Sub-County/Division: This theme explores concepts of peace, conflict resolution, and child rights. Grammar focus includes conditional sentences and adverbs of place. Activities may involve role-playing conflict situations, discussing child rights, and writing about peaceful solutions.

Term III

  • Theme 9: Culture and Gender: This theme explores cultural traditions, values, and gender roles. Grammar focus includes comparing past and present tenses. Activities may involve acting out traditional stories, discussing gender equality, and writing about cultural customs.
  • Theme 10: Our Health: This theme focuses on health, hygiene, and disease prevention. Grammar focus includes future tense review and countable/uncountable nouns. Activities may involve discussing healthy habits, labeling diagrams of the body, and writing about health rules. ,
  • Theme 11: Basic Technology: This theme introduces vocabulary related to tools, machines, and simple technology. Grammar focus includes tense review and passive voice. Activities may involve experimenting with materials, following instructions to make things, and writing about how things work.
  • Theme 12: Energy: This theme explores different sources of energy and their uses. Grammar focus includes measurement vocabulary and word problems. Activities may involve discussing energy conservation, drawing diagrams of energy sources, and writing about the importance of energy.
