Uganda Primary 2 Curriculum - Mathematics

This document outlines the mathematics curriculum for Primary 2 in Uganda. It is organized by term and covers various topics designed to build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and skills. The curriculum emphasizes learner-centered learning and practical activities.

Term 1:

  • Numeration System and Place Value: This topic introduces numbers up to 999, focusing on counting, reading, and writing number symbols and names. Learners explore place values (hundreds, tens, and ones) and the concept of zero as a placeholder. Activities include sorting, grouping, and comparing sets of objects to develop number sense.
  • Addition: Learners begin adding 2-digit numbers horizontally and vertically, without carrying. Practical activities using concrete objects and number lines help visualize the addition process.
  • Subtraction: Subtraction of 2- and 3-digit numbers is introduced, focusing on vertical subtraction without borrowing. Similar to addition, concrete objects and number lines are used to illustrate the concept.
  • Sets: This topic introduces basic set concepts, including classifying, ordering, comparing, and forming sets. Learners also explore the idea of empty sets.
  • Shapes: Learners begin recognizing and naming basic 2D shapes. Activities may involve sorting and classifying shapes based on their properties.
  • Measures: Introduction to measurement using non-standard units. Learners measure and compare heights, widths, and breadths of objects.

Term 2:

  • Numeration System and Place Value: Extending counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 300. Further exploration of place value.
  • Addition: Continue practicing addition with 2-digit numbers, introducing horizontal addition.
  • Subtraction: Continue practicing subtraction with 2- and 3-digit numbers, introducing horizontal subtraction without borrowing.
  • Multiplication: Introduction to multiplication as repeated addition. Multiplication by 2, 3, and 10 is introduced using concrete objects and counting.
  • Measures: Measuring weight using non-standard units.
  • Data Handling: Introduction to collecting, recording, and reporting data using simple charts and graphs.

Term 3:

  • Numeration System and Place Value: Extend counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 999. Reinforce understanding of place value.
  • Addition: Introduce adding 3-digit numbers vertically, without carrying.
  • Subtraction: Continue practicing subtraction, now with 3-digit numbers, still without borrowing.
  • Multiplication: Extend multiplication to include multiplication by 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. The concept of multiplication tables is introduced.
  • Division: Introduction to division as sharing equally. Dividing 2-digit numbers by 2 and 3 without remainders.
  • Fractions: Introduce the concept of fractions, focusing on naming, drawing, reading, and writing simple fractions like 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.
  • Measures: Measuring liquids using non-standard units. Telling time in hours and half-hours. Working with money (buying and selling) using denominations from Shs 500 to Shs 1000.
  • Shapes: Continue working with shapes, comparing and labeling them. Introduce the concept of 3D shapes (solids).
