Uganda Primary 2 Curriculum - Science

This outlines the science-related components of the Uganda Primary 2 Thematic Curriculum. The curriculum uses a thematic approach, integrating science topics within broader themes relevant to the child's experiences. Specific science content is woven into various themes throughout the three terms.

Term I

  • Theme 1: Our School and Neighbourhood: This theme explores the relationship between the school and its surroundings. While not directly science-focused, it lays the groundwork for observing and understanding the environment.
  • Theme 2: Our Home and Community: This theme delves into family relationships and community roles. It touches upon health and hygiene practices, indirectly introducing health science concepts.
  • Theme 3: The Human Body and Health: This theme directly addresses science topics.
      • Parts of the body and their functions: Students learn to identify and name different body parts and describe their functions.
      • Sanitation: This sub-theme covers the importance of cleanliness in various areas like the bathroom, house, and compound. It also introduces the tools and methods used for cleaning.
      • Personal hygiene: Students learn about personal hygiene practices like brushing, bathing, and handwashing. Disease prevention is also introduced, covering topics like avoiding smoking and spitting, and protecting against harmful insects.
  • Theme 4: Food and Nutrition: This theme focuses on food and nutrition.
      • Classification of foods: Students learn about different food groups, including energy-giving foods (cassava, potatoes, rice), body-building foods (milk, eggs, fish), and protective foods (fruits and vegetables).
      • Good feeding: This sub-theme introduces the concept of a balanced diet and its importance for health, strength, and growth.
      • Effects of poor feeding: Students learn about the consequences of malnutrition, including health problems, and the signs of malnutrition.

Term II

  • Theme 5: Our Environment: This theme centers on the environment and its components.
      • Common animals: Students learn about domestic and wild animals, their young, and their uses.
      • Common insects: This sub-theme covers the characteristics of insects, naming common insects, and differentiating between useful and harmful insects.
      • Common plants: Students learn about plant parts, their uses, harmful plants, seeds, and the conditions necessary for plant growth.
  • Theme 6: Things We Make: This theme, while focused on making things, incorporates the use of natural materials, linking to environmental science.

Term III

  • Theme 7: Transport in Our Community: This theme focuses on transportation, with some indirect links to environmental impact and safety.
  • Theme 8: Accidents and Safety: This theme explores accident prevention and safety measures, including basic first aid.
  • Themes 9-12: These themes (Peace and Security, Child Protection, Measures, and Recreation, Festivals and Holidays) do not have direct science content.

This structure integrates science learning within the context of the child's world, promoting a holistic understanding of their environment and themselves. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on activities, observation, and discussion to facilitate learning.
