Uganda Senior One Physical Education Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for healthy living and active participation in society. Physical Education is a compulsory subject. The curriculum emphasizes practical skills, active learning, and personal development. It promotes physical literacy, healthy lifestyles, and the development of important generic skills such as communication, cooperation, and critical thinking.

Term 1

  • Introduction to Physical Education: This topic introduces learners to the concept of Physical Education, differentiating it from sports and games. It explores the benefits of physical activity for individuals and society.
  • Safety and First Aid: Learners acquire knowledge and skills in basic first aid procedures for common injuries that may occur during physical activities. This includes understanding the importance of first aid, applying safety procedures, and using the contents of a first aid kit.
  • Body Conditioning: This topic focuses on understanding the body's role in physical activity and injury prevention. Learners practice warm-up and cool-down exercises and understand their importance in preparing the body for physical activity and aiding recovery.
  • Movement Concepts (Educational Gymnastics): Learners explore basic gymnastic movements and body shapes, developing body awareness, coordination, and spatial awareness. Safety precautions and spotting techniques are emphasized.

Term 2

  • Exercise, Rest, and Hygiene: This topic emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to physical activity, rest, and hygiene for overall well-being. Learners understand the benefits of exercise and rest, and develop good hygiene practices related to physical activity.
  • Athletics (Basic Running Skills): Learners develop fundamental running skills, including starts, sprinting techniques, and baton exchange. They also learn about safety precautions and the use of improvised equipment.
  • Games (Basic Skills in Rounders): This topic introduces the basic skills of rounders, including throwing, catching, batting, and fielding. Learners also learn about the rules of the game and safety considerations.

Term 3

  • Skills Development and Diet: Learners explore different types of skills and factors that influence skill performance. They also learn about the importance of healthy eating and its relationship to physical activity.
  • Games (Basic Skills in Netball): Learners develop fundamental netball skills, including passing, catching, shooting, and footwork. They also learn the basic rules and safety precautions of the game.
  • Games (Basic Skills in Volleyball): This topic introduces the basic skills of volleyball, such as serving, receiving, setting, and spiking. Learners also learn about the rules of the game and safety considerations.

This curriculum uses a learner-centered approach, encouraging active participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Teachers are expected to adapt learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of their learners. Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, focusing on formative assessment to provide feedback and guide instruction.
