Uganda Senior Three History Curriculum - History

This curriculum focuses on developing understanding through evidence analysis, inquiry, and rational thought. It encourages active learning, where learners explore real-world situations, express ideas in their own words, and develop critical thinking skills.

Theme 1: The Uganda Railway

  • Background, Reasons, Problems Faced, and Results: This topic explores the rationale behind the railway's construction, the challenges encountered during its construction, the regions and towns it served, its impact on East African development, and the reasons for its decline.

Theme 2: The Devonshire White Paper of 1923 in Kenya

  • The Devonshire White Paper: This topic examines the events leading to the signing of the Devonshire White Paper, its main terms, its application to different groups (Africans, Asians, British), and its contribution to Kenya's independence.

Theme 3: World War II in East Africa (1939-1945)

  • World War II in East Africa: This topic covers the background of World War II, the reasons for East Africa's involvement, the roles of East African leaders, the impact of the war on the region, and its contribution to the rise of independence movements.

Theme 4: Our Systems of Government

This theme explores the structures, roles, principles, and issues related to various aspects of democratic governance.

  • Systems of Government: This topic differentiates between country, nation, state, and government; examines the structure of Uganda's government (three arms); analyzes the best structure for good governance; explores other East African government systems; and compares Uganda's system with Nigeria's.
  • The National Constitution in Uganda: This topic covers the importance of the national constitution, national symbols, and values; the duties and responsibilities of a citizen; and the roles of the police, prisons, and the army.
  • Political Parties in Uganda: This topic defines political parties and their role in governance, and identifies the challenges faced by political parties in East Africa.
  • Elections: This topic explores the reasons for participating in elections, the criteria for voting or being voted into power, the election process in Uganda, and the advantages of free and fair elections.
  • The Forms of Media in Uganda: This topic examines different forms of media in Uganda, their advantages and disadvantages, and their role in governance and development.
  • Citizenship: This topic covers the values of a good citizen (honesty, respect for others' rights), the reasons for paying taxes, and the use of persuasive language in elections.
  • The Parliament of Uganda: This topic explores the history and role of parliaments, the structure of Uganda's parliament, and the roles of its members and bodies.
  • Structure of the Judiciary: This topic examines the different court levels in Uganda (LC1-LC5, Magistrate, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court) and their functions.
  • Corruption: This topic defines corruption, explores its causes and impact in Uganda, and examines efforts to combat it.

Theme 5: Human Rights

  • Human Rights: This topic defines human rights, the rule of law, and civil society; explores the role of CSOs in promoting and protecting human rights; examines ways human rights are violated and how to avoid them; emphasizes the importance of respecting human rights; and evaluates the benefits of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Theme 6: The Uganda Crisis of 1967

  • The Uganda Crisis of 1967: This topic examines the political situation leading to the 1967 crisis, the key events, and the crisis's impact on peace and development.

Theme 7: Leadership of Idi Amin Dada in Uganda

  • Amin's Early Life and Rise to Power: This topic explores Amin's background and the political context that led to his rise to power.
  • Achievements and Weaknesses of Amin's Regime: This topic evaluates the successes and failures of Amin's rule, including the expulsion of Asians, and analyzes the factors leading to his downfall.

Theme 8: Recent Issues in East African History

  • The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) Conflict: This topic explores the LRA's formation, aims, methods, the challenges faced by the government in combating it, the conflict's impact, and the challenges of restoring traditional leaders.
  • The Role of African Traditional Institutions in Solving Conflicts in Northern Uganda: This topic defines traditional institutions, explains the restoration of traditional leaders, examines the contribution of traditional and modern justice mechanisms in restoring peace, and evaluates the role of traditional leaders in peacebuilding.
  • Emerging Historical Events in the World Today: This topic explores various recent historical events, including the Cold War, China's rise as a world power, its relationship with Africa, and the development of South Korea.
