Uganda Senior Two (S2) Curriculum - Kiswahili
This curriculum for Kiswahili Language is part of the Lower Secondary School Curriculum. It emphasizes a learner-centered approach, focusing on developing skills and competencies rather than rote memorization. The curriculum aims to develop confident individuals, responsible and patriotic citizens, and positive contributors to society. Kiswahili is a compulsory subject alongside English.
Term One
- 1.1 Watu wa Nyumbani (People of the Home): This topic focuses on vocabulary related to family members, greetings, and polite expressions. Students learn to identify and use relevant vocabulary, pronounce Kiswahili sounds correctly, role-play family roles, describe household chores, and tell short stories about their families. Grammatical concepts covered include noun classes (A-WA) and sentence construction.
- 1.2 Jamii (Community): This topic introduces vocabulary related to important places in the community. Students learn to give directions, use a compass, and discuss activities that take place in different locations. They also practice using various verbs and noun classes (U-I) in sentences.
- 1.3 Hesabu (Numbers): This topic covers numbers, days of the week, and months of the year. Students learn to count, compare numbers, use mathematical symbols, tell time, and use adjectives of quantity, quality, and interrogatives. They also practice writing guided essays about their daily routines.
- 1.4 Wanyama na Ndege (Animals and Birds): This topic focuses on vocabulary related to domestic and wild animals and birds. Students learn animal names, their sounds, their benefits, and related terms like offspring. Grammatical concepts include possessive adjectives and noun classes (A-WA).
- 1.5 Mimea na Matunda (Plants and Fruits): This topic introduces vocabulary related to plants, food, and fruits. Students learn plant names, their products, and their importance. They also practice ordering food in a restaurant setting, reciting poems, and using noun classes (KI-VI) and prepositions in sentences.
- 1.6 Biashara (Trade): This topic covers vocabulary related to trade and commerce. Students learn about products, buying and selling, and related terms like money, debt, and profit. They practice role-playing buying and selling scenarios and using noun classes (I-ZI) and different tenses in sentences.
Term Two
- 1.7 Nyumba (House): This topic focuses on vocabulary related to different parts of a house and the items found within. Students learn to describe rooms, their contents, and the function of various household items. They also practice using noun classes (U-ZI), demonstrative adjectives, and giving commands.
- 1.8 Shuleni (At School): This topic covers vocabulary related to school, including people and their roles, school items, and their uses. Students learn to describe school activities and show respect for school staff. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (U-YA), different sentence structures, and the past tense.
- 1.9 Michezo (Games/Sports): This topic introduces vocabulary related to sports and games. Students learn about different sports, famous athletes, sports equipment, and the benefits of sports. They also discuss how to avoid accidents during sports. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (U-I), conjunctions, and the perfect tense.
Term Three
- 2.1 Uongozi Katika Jamii (Leadership in the Community): This topic covers vocabulary related to leadership and democracy. Students learn about different leadership roles, their responsibilities, and the qualities of good leadership. They also practice role-playing election campaigns and using noun classes (I-I) and the future tense.
- 2.2 Afya na Usafi (Health and Hygiene): This topic focuses on vocabulary related to health and hygiene practices. Students learn about hygiene items, their uses, health-related vocabulary, diseases, and preventive measures. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (YA-YA), verb conjugations, and adverbs of manner and quantity.
- 2.3 Sherehe Katika Familia (Family Celebrations): This topic covers vocabulary related to family celebrations. Students learn about different celebrations, their importance, and the consequences of premarital relationships. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (PA-KU-MU) and verb conjugations.
- 2.4 Salamu na Adabu (Greetings and Etiquette): This topic expands on greetings and polite expressions. Students learn additional greetings and etiquette phrases and practice using them in role-playing scenarios. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (A-WA and I-ZI) and personal pronouns.
- 2.5 Hesabu (Numbers): This topic builds on previous number concepts, introducing fractions, shapes, and additional vocabulary. Students practice using noun classes (LI-YA), adjectives, and solving riddles.
- 2.6 Usafiri (Transportation): This topic covers vocabulary related to transportation and road safety. Students learn about different modes of transport, road signs, and road safety practices. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (I-ZI), demonstrative adjectives, and conjunctions.
- 2.7 Mawasiliano (Communication): This topic focuses on vocabulary related to communication. Students learn about different communication tools and practice making phone calls. Grammatical concepts include reflexive pronouns and synonyms.
- 2.8 Biashara (Trade): This topic expands on trade and commerce, introducing vocabulary related to money, banking, and budgeting. Grammatical concepts include the use of -ndi- and reflexive pronouns, and emphatic adjectives.
- 2.9 Sehemu za Mwili (Parts of the Body): This topic covers vocabulary related to the human body, both external and internal parts. Students learn about body parts, their functions, and health-related vocabulary. Grammatical concepts include noun classes (LI-YA, KI-VI, U-I) and personal pronouns.
Assessment
Continuous assessment is a key part of the learning process. Teachers are expected to make professional judgments about student learning based on their observations of student performance in various activities. Assessment focuses on the learner's ability to apply knowledge and skills in different contexts. The syllabus provides examples of assessment activities related to each topic. Summative teacher assessment contributes to the final grade. |
