Ukraine 10th Grade Curriculum - Basis of Health

Introduction:

The Basis of Health curriculum in Ukraine is undergoing significant transformations as part of the "New Ukrainian School" reform. This reform, initiated in 2016, aims to modernize the education system and better prepare students for the challenges of the modern world. The full-scale war with Russia has further necessitated adjustments to the curriculum, particularly concerning safety and health in wartime conditions.

Basis of Health Curriculum (Grades 5-9):

The Basis of Health curriculum is a key component of the social and health-preserving educational field. It aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for maintaining their own health and well-being, as well as promoting the health of others.

  • Health Education Topics: The curriculum covers a wide range of health-related topics, including:
      • General Health: Concepts of health, health values, components and levels of health.
      • Physical Health: Physical development, physiological changes during adolescence, factors influencing health, healthy lifestyle, physical activity, prevention of non-communicable diseases and injuries, infectious diseases (including HIV, tuberculosis, and COVID-19), hygiene, and nutrition.
      • Mental and Emotional Health: Personality and mental processes, emotional intelligence, consequences of various behaviors, bullying, and critical thinking about information.
      • Social Health: Family, parenthood, and prevention of substance abuse (alcohol and drugs).
      • Spiritual Health: Spirituality, moral and ethical values, meaning of life, and health culture.
  • Safety Education Topics: Safety education is integrated within the Basis of Health curriculum and addresses various aspects of safety, including:
      • General Safety: Concepts of safety, danger, and risk; types of dangerous situations; rules for responding to dangerous situations; interaction with emergency services.
      • Safety in Everyday Life: Risks of household injuries, safe use of household appliances and chemicals, home security, and street safety.
      • Safety in Emergencies: Natural and man-made hazards (adjusted based on local context), fire safety (prevention and response).
      • Digital Safety: Risks of online and telephone scams.
      • First Aid: Basic first aid procedures for electric shock, chemical exposure, poisoning, and road traffic accidents.

Curriculum Changes Due to the War:

The ongoing war with Russia has led to significant additions to the Basis of Health curriculum, focusing on military risks and safety measures:

  • Wartime Risks: Protection during shelling, bombing, and missile strikes; evacuation procedures; choosing safe shelters; actions under rubble; and responding to chemical and radiation hazards.
  • Explosive Objects: Types and characteristics of explosive objects; identifying dangerous areas; and rules of behavior when encountering explosive objects.
  • Emergency First Aid: Expanded first aid topics relevant to wartime injuries.
  • Psychological Self-Help: Coping with traumatic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-help techniques, and managing fear and panic.
  • Information Security: Safe use of digital devices, risks of online communication during wartime, and countering misinformation.

10th Grade and Beyond:

While the provided text focuses on grades 5-9, it anticipates that the New Ukrainian School reform will likely lead to changes in specialized secondary education (grades 10-12), potentially including a dedicated course on safety and health. The "Defense of Ukraine" subject, currently taught in grades 10-11, also incorporates safety and first aid elements relevant to emergency situations.
