I Explore The World: Ukraine Grade 1-2 Syllabus

This document details the curriculum for the integrated course "I Explore The World" for Grades 1 and 2 in Ukraine, based on the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Grade 1

Human:

  • Human as Part of Nature and Society: Students learn about themselves, their differences from other living beings, their place of residence, and safe behavior at home and on the street. They also learn about their sensory organs, hygiene skills, and caring for their bodies. The curriculum includes observations in the environment and the organization of studies.
  • A Person Among People: This section focuses on family, school, and behavior in public places. Students learn about moral norms, coexistence, cooperation skills, and standards of conduct in society. They also learn about moral qualities such as benevolence, truthfulness, and sincerity. The curriculum includes observations in the environment, organization of studies, and solving situations of moral choice.
  • Human in Society: Students learn the name of their country and its capital. They also learn about state symbols (flag, coat of arms, anthem, Ukrainian language) and historical monuments. The curriculum covers the connections between people in society, the importance of people's work, and being oriented in their nearest space. Students are encouraged to be involved in useful community causes.
  • Human and the Environment: This section focuses on a tolerant attitude towards the diversity of cultures and customs of people living in Ukraine and abroad. Students conduct experiments and observations in nature. They learn about human-made objects, materials, their properties, and the inventions of humanity and their impact on human vitality.
  • Human and Nature: Students learn to recognize bodies of inanimate and living nature and human-made objects. They learn about the Sun's significance, air, water, soil, and their properties. The curriculum covers the diversity of living organisms, daily and seasonal changes in nature, and the reasons for their repetition. Students establish simple relationships in living and inanimate nature, between living organisms and the environment, and between natural conditions and people's economic activities. They learn about the value of nature, the dependence of the quality of life on the environment, and the rules of conduct in nature. Students are encouraged to participate in environmental activities.

Grade 2

Human:

  • Knowledge of Self, Health, and Safety: Students tell about themselves and others, express their preferences, describe their character and admirations, recognize and describe hazards at home and school, make decisions in simple household situations related to health and safety, explain safety rules for the street, home, and school, determine healthy and harmful habits, and examine changes taking place with a human.
  • Human Among People: Students explain their roles in the family, among peers, and at school. They adhere to rules of conduct that demonstrate respect for others, use courtesy words appropriately, assist when asked, pronounce judgment on acts and events, draw evidence for their conclusions, respect the rights of other children, and collaborate in groups to achieve common goals.
  • Human in Society: Students recognize and respect the state symbols of Ukraine. They inquire and collect information about their region and state, historical events, and famous persons. They ask elders about the past and take an active part in events of national importance. They adhere to established rules of conduct during public holidays and public events.
  • Human and the Environment: Students learn about the diversity of people in the world and name some countries. They develop tolerance towards other countries and peoples, show interest in information about other countries and peoples, and demonstrate a friendly attitude toward people of other nationalities, cultures, and customs. They also learn about the contribution of Ukrainians to world achievements.
  • Human and Nature: Students learn about the Earth's shape, the Sun's influence on seasonal phenomena, the causes of changes since the beginning of the year, the seasons and corresponding months, phenomena in living and inanimate nature at different seasons, and plant growing conditions. They provide examples of the relationship between humans and nature, recognize changes in living and inanimate nature, distinguish the shapes of the Earth's surface, classify plants and animals, determine the purpose of study, choose the sequence of actions and equipment for study implementation, perform study tasks (e.g., studying properties of air, water, soil, rocks, plants), record study results, learn about nature using different sources, apply knowledge of nature in educational and life situations, give examples of products that help people in everyday life, tell about the use of materials based on their properties, find information about important inventions, conclude that nature needs protection, and participate in environmental protection activities.
