Ukraine Grade 5 Curriculum - Chemistry

Introduction to Chemistry (Part of Environmental Studies)

This curriculum is based on the Environmental Studies curriculum for Grade 5, approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Chemistry concepts are introduced within the broader context of natural sciences.

Introduction (6 hours)

  • Sciences studying nature: Students learn about natural sciences, including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Astronomy, and Ecology, and their contribution to understanding nature. Methods of studying nature, such as observation, experiment, and measurement, are also introduced.
  • Equipment for studying nature: Students learn about equipment used for studying nature and its applications.
  • Importance of natural science knowledge: The importance of natural science knowledge for humans is emphasized.

Section I: Objects, Substances and Phenomena Around Us (15 hours)

This section introduces basic chemistry concepts related to matter:

  • Objects and Substances: Students learn about object characteristics (shape, size, mass, volume), devices for measurement, and the difference between pure substances and mixtures. Examples of inorganic and organic substances are provided.
  • Physical Properties of Substances: Students explore physical properties of substances (color, gloss, smell, state of matter) and the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. The concepts of atoms and molecules are introduced, along with the phenomenon of diffusion.
  • Chemical Phenomena: Students learn about chemical phenomena, including combustion and putrefaction, and the conditions under which combustion occurs. Methods of mixture separation (retention, filtration, evaporation) are also covered.

Other Sections Related to Chemistry:

While the other sections of the Environmental Studies curriculum primarily focus on other natural sciences, they may touch upon chemistry concepts indirectly:

  • Section II. Universe (8 hours): This section covers celestial bodies and the Solar System, which can relate to the chemical composition of stars and planets.
  • Section III. Earth as a planet in the Solar System (16 hours + 15 hours + 7 hours): This section covers topics such as the Earth's structure, soil composition, air properties, water properties and the water cycle, and the impact of humans on the environment. These topics can relate to chemical processes and interactions within the Earth's systems.
