Introduction to Ukraine
Ukraine is a country located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It shares land borders with several countries including Poland, Belarus, Romania, Moldova, and Russia. The country is primarily made up of fertile plains known as steppes, making it suitable for agriculture, and earning it the nickname "breadbasket of Europe".
Major Geographical Features
Carpathian Mountains
The Carpathian Mountains are located in the western part of Ukraine. They are the highest mountain range in the country, with Hoverla peak being the highest point at 2,061 meters.
Rivers and Plains
Ukraine is characterized by vast plains and plateaus, crisscrossed by numerous rivers. The Dnieper River is the longest river in Ukraine and the fourth longest in Europe, flowing from Belarus through central Ukraine to the Black Sea. Other important rivers include the Dniester, Southern Buh, and Siverskyi Donets.
Crimean Peninsula
The Crimean Peninsula is located in southern Ukraine, extending into the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It is connected to the mainland by the Perekop Isthmus. The peninsula is characterized by a diverse landscape, including mountains, steppes, and a rugged coastline with numerous bays and harbors. |
