GCSE Classical Civilisation
This course offers a comprehensive study of ancient Greek and Roman culture, encompassing literature, visual and material culture, history, and societal aspects. It is offered by OCR exam board.
Curriculum Content
The curriculum covers the period from 3000 BCE to 500 CE, focusing on ancient literature and visual/material culture from both Greece and Rome and their surrounding worlds. Students explore various themes, including mythology, religion, city life, the Homeric world, war and warfare, and the role of women in the ancient world.
Assessment
The GCSE Classical Civilisation is assessed through 100% examination. Students are required to complete two components:
- Thematic Study (J199/11-12): Students choose one of the following thematic studies:
- Women in the Ancient World
- Literature and Culture (J199/21-23): Students choose one of the following options:
Each exam is 1 hour and 30 minutes long and worth 90 marks, representing 50% of the total GCSE grade. The exam consists of three sections, one on Greece, one on Rome, and a comparative section on both, each worth 30 marks. Past papers and mark schemes are available to aid in exam preparation.
