GCSE English Language

GCSE English Language focuses on developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn to analyze various texts, write in different styles, and communicate effectively. The GCSE English Language qualification is essential for careers involving English, such as journalism, copywriting, teaching, or editing.

Exam Boards

Several exam boards administer the GCSE English Language qualification, including AQA, OCR, Pearson (Edexcel), and WJEC Eduqas. Each board sets its own assessments, although the subject content is regulated by the Department for Education. There are some differences in how each exam board structures their exams.

Exam Structure and Content

The GCSE English Language exam typically involves two papers. One paper focuses on reading comprehension and creative writing, requiring students to analyze a literary fiction text and respond creatively using narrative and descriptive techniques. The other paper assesses reading comprehension and writing skills related to non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts, focusing on viewpoints and perspectives. Texts studied include those from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

Skills Assessed

The GCSE English Language exam assesses several key skills, including:

Spoken Language Endorsement

The endorsement is reported separately on the GCSE certificate with a grade of Not Classified, Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
