GCSE Modern Foreign Languages (e.g., French, German, Spanish)

This course aims to develop students' ability to communicate in a modern foreign language, encompassing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Students develop their understanding of the culture associated with the language they are studying. The curriculum emphasizes practical communication skills, enabling students to engage with authentic materials and real-life situations.

Curriculum

The GCSE Modern Foreign Languages curriculum covers a range of topics, including identity and culture, local, national, international and global areas of interest, and current and future study and employment. Students are expected to develop their linguistic competence, covering grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and phonics. The curriculum aims to foster an appreciation for different cultures and perspectives.

Changes were introduced to the subject content for GCSEs in French, German, and Spanish, with first teaching in September 2024 and first assessments in summer 2026. These changes include a focus on the most commonly occurring vocabulary.

A temporary change was implemented in summer 2022, removing the requirement for unfamiliar vocabulary in assessments. Further adaptations to assessments were proposed for exams from summer 2023.

Assessment

GCSE Modern Foreign Languages assessments evaluate students' proficiency across all four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking assessments typically involve role-plays, presentations, and discussions. Written exams assess reading comprehension, translation, and writing skills.

A variety of resources are available to support GCSE Modern Foreign Languages teaching and learning, including textbooks, online platforms, and interactive exercises. These resources cater to different learning styles and offer opportunities for independent study and practice.
