GCSE Latin
GCSE Latin is a qualification offered in the United Kingdom, usually taken at the end of Year 11. It focuses on developing linguistic and cultural competence, allowing students to gain knowledge and understanding of the Roman world and its language. Several exam boards offer GCSE Latin, including OCR, Eduqas/WJEC, and Cambridge (IGCSE).
OCR
The OCR GCSE Latin qualification consists of three components: Language, Literature, and either Literature or Roman Civilisation. The Language paper assesses translation and comprehension skills, while the Literature papers focus on set texts.
Eduqas/WJEC
The Eduqas/WJEC GCSE Latin qualification also comprises three components: Language, Literature and Source (Themes), and Roman Civilisation. The Language paper tests translation, comprehension, and grammar. The Literature and Source paper examines set texts and historical sources. The Roman Civilisation paper explores aspects of Roman culture and society. It's worth noting that WJEC examinations are open-book.
Cambridge IGCSE
The Cambridge IGCSE Latin syllabus aims to develop students' ability to understand Latin, recognizing its influence on modern European languages. It focuses on language skills, including reading comprehension and translation. |
