GCSE Physical Education (PE)

GCSE Physical Education equips students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to develop their performance in sport and physical activity. The curriculum covers a range of topics, combining theoretical study with practical application. Students learn about the human body, movement analysis, training principles, health and fitness, and the socio-cultural influences on sport. Assessment varies depending on the exam board but generally includes written exams and non-exam assessments of practical performance.

Curriculum

The GCSE PE curriculum is designed to be broad, coherent, and practical, encouraging students to be inspired, motivated, and challenged by the subject. Key areas of study include:

  • Applied Anatomy and Physiology: Students learn about the structure and function of the human body and how it responds to exercise.
  • Movement Analysis (Biomechanics): This involves analyzing movement patterns and techniques to improve performance.
  • Physical Training: Students explore different training methods and principles to optimize fitness and performance.
  • Health, Fitness, and Well-being: This area focuses on the importance of physical activity for health and well-being, covering topics such as nutrition, lifestyle choices, and the prevention of illness.
  • Sport Psychology: Students learn about the psychological factors that influence performance, such as motivation, confidence, and stress management.
  • Socio-Cultural Influences: This explores the social and cultural factors that impact participation in sport, including issues such as ethics, equity, and the role of media.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary depending on the exam board but typically involve a combination of written exams and non-exam assessments.

  • Written Exams: These assess theoretical knowledge and understanding of the key topics.
  • Non-Exam Assessment (NEA): This involves practical performance in a chosen activity or activities, often combined with an analysis and evaluation of performance.

Exam Boards

Several exam boards offer GCSE PE qualifications, including:

  • AQA:
  • OCR:
  • Edexcel:
  • WJEC:

Each exam board has its own specification, which outlines the specific content and assessment requirements.

Practical Activities

Students are assessed on their practical performance in a range of activities. The allowed activities vary slightly between exam boards but are generally drawn from a list approved by the Department for Education. Some examples include:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Rock Climbing
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Trampolining

Students typically choose three activities for assessment, with at least one in an individual sport and one in a team sport. The assessment criteria focus on skill development, tactical awareness, and the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in a practical context.
