This document details the course entries for the United Kingdom Year 3 National Curriculum - Geography.

Locational Knowledge

  • Understanding the UK: Students learn to differentiate between the British Isles, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. They also learn to locate and name the main islands surrounding the UK.
  • European and Global Locations: Students learn to locate and name at least eight European countries. They also learn to name at least four countries each from the Southern and Northern hemispheres.

Place Knowledge

  • UK and Contrasting Non-European Area: Students study the human and physical geography of a small area within the United Kingdom and compare it to a small area in a contrasting non-European country. This helps them understand geographical similarities and differences.
  • Understanding Regions: Students develop an understanding of what constitutes a 'region' and its characteristics.

Human and Physical Geography

  • Defining Features: Students learn to identify and differentiate between human and physical geographical features. Human features are those created by humans, while physical features are natural.
  • UK Focus: Students learn to identify and describe human and physical features within the United Kingdom.
  • Examples of Features: Examples of human features include cities, towns, villages, factories, farms, and offices. Examples of physical features include mountains, rivers, coasts, and seas.

Geographical Skills and Fieldwork

  • Using Tools: Students learn to use maps, atlases, globes, and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.
  • Fieldwork Techniques: Students develop basic fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its surrounding area. This includes observing, collecting, recording, and interpreting geographical data.
  • Map Skills: Students develop map skills, including using compass points to describe locations.
