United Kingdom Year 2 Computing Syllabus

This document outlines the key components of a typical Computing curriculum for Year 2 students in the United Kingdom, based on the National Curriculum. It encompasses three core strands: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy.

Computer Science

  • Algorithms and Programming: Students are introduced to the concept of algorithms as sets of instructions. They learn how these instructions are implemented as programs on digital devices and how programs execute by following precise and unambiguous steps. This often involves practical activities like giving and following instructions, creating sequences of instructions, and using visual programming tools to control on-screen objects or robots.
  • Logical Reasoning: Pupils begin to develop logical reasoning skills by predicting the outcomes of instructions and identifying errors (bugs) in algorithms. They learn to debug, or fix, these errors.

Information Technology

  • Using Technology: Students learn to use various software and hardware, including common applications and input/output devices. They develop skills in creating and editing digital content, such as text, images, and sound.
  • Data Handling: Pupils are introduced to basic data handling concepts, such as collecting, organizing, and representing data in simple charts and tables.

Digital Literacy

  • Staying Safe Online: Year 2 emphasizes online safety, teaching children about responsible and appropriate online behavior, including identifying and avoiding potential dangers.
  • Being Responsible Digital Citizens: Students learn about the ethical use of technology and the importance of respecting others online. This includes understanding concepts like copyright and plagiarism.
  • Using Technology Beyond School: Pupils explore the diverse ways technology is used in everyday life and its impact on different aspects of society.

This curriculum aims to equip young learners with the foundational computational thinking and creativity skills necessary to navigate and shape the digital world.
