Second Grade Math Curriculum

This curriculum outline is based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. It focuses on four critical areas:

1. Extending Understanding of Base-Ten Notation: Students expand their understanding of the base-ten system. This includes understanding place value up to 1000, comparing and ordering numbers, and skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s. 2. Building Fluency with Addition and Subtraction: Students develop fluency in adding and subtracting numbers within 100. They learn to use various strategies, including mental math, algorithms, and models. 3. Using Standard Units of Measure: Students learn to measure and estimate lengths in standard units, such as inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They also work with money, learning to identify coins and bills, count money, and make change. 4. Describing and Analyzing Shapes: Students describe and analyze shapes, including identifying and classifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. They also explore patterns and create pictographs.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Numbers and Operations in Base Ten: Place value, comparing and ordering numbers, addition and subtraction within 100, skip counting.
  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Solving word problems involving addition and subtraction, understanding odd and even numbers.
  • Measurement and Data: Measuring and estimating lengths, telling time, working with money, representing data using pictographs.
  • Geometry: Identifying and classifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, exploring patterns.
  • Fractions: Understanding and working with basic fractions, such as halves, thirds, and fourths.

Additional Skills:

  • Counting to 1000
  • Identifying the value of US coins and dollars
  • Solving money word problems
  • Telling time
  • Working with number lines
  • Exploring number patterns

This curriculum aims to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and skills, preparing them for future math learning.
