United States 5th Grade Technology Curriculum

This curriculum integrates technology skills with classroom learning, covering various software and digital tools.

Typing Skills

  • Keyboarding: Students continue developing touch-typing proficiency, focusing on accuracy and proper finger placement over speed. A benchmark of approximately 25 words per minute is suggested. Proper keyboard finger placement is emphasized.
  • Typing Practice Websites: Several online resources are utilized, including Dance Mat Typing, Typing Rocket Jr., and Keyboard Climber.

Spreadsheet Skills

  • Basic Concepts: Students learn spreadsheet vocabulary (rows, columns, cells, data, values, formulas) and use various spreadsheet applications (Microsoft, Google, Apple).
  • Budgeting: Students create budgets with accompanying charts for various scenarios:
      • School Supplies: Managing a $65 budget.
      • Clothing: Managing a $150 budget.
      • Party Food: Planning a party for five people with a $25 budget.
      • Pet Adoption: Budgeting for a new puppy with $200.
      • Birthday Party: Planning a party for fifteen people with a $100 budget, using online resources for price research.
  • Profit/Loss Analysis: Students create a profit/loss spreadsheet and chart for a lemonade stand, using a random number generator for sales and expense data.
  • Nutrition Analysis: Students chart fast food nutrition and calorie information, planning meals and researching nutritional facts online.
  • Spreadsheet Formulas: Students practice using formulas in spreadsheets, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and multiple operations.

Other Technology Projects

  • Word Processing: Students use word processing for various activities, including writing about their vacations with a graphic organizer.
  • Digital Presentations: Presentations are a focus in the 4th quarter.
  • Graphics/Photo Editing: Graphics and photo editing are explored in the 3rd quarter.
  • Coding and Logic Games: Coding and logic games are introduced in the 2nd quarter.
  • Project-Based Learning: Students engage in various technology projects, such as:
      • Designing book covers.
      • Writing personification stories.
      • Creating state promotional materials.
      • Developing historical newsletters.
      • Building professional portfolios for historical figures.

This curriculum aims to provide a comprehensive technology education for 5th graders, integrating practical skills with creative projects.
