6th Grade Arts

This course introduces students to a wider range of artistic mediums and techniques, building upon their elementary art foundation. Students explore various art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, while developing their creative problem-solving skills. They learn about the elements of art (line, color, value, shape, form, space, and texture) and principles of design (balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, proportion, pattern, movement, rhythm, harmony, and variety). Students also begin to analyze and evaluate art, considering the creative process and its impact. Many 6th-grade art curricula incorporate art history, exposing students to different artistic styles and cultural contexts. Project-based learning is common, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills through hands-on activities. Some curricula follow a thematic approach, such as contemporary or modern art connections.

Specific examples of projects and activities include:

  • Chalk Flower Art Project: This project can be adapted for different skill levels and can involve creating chalk drawings of flowers on sidewalks or paper.
  • Geometric Hearts: This project combines geometry and art, allowing students to explore shapes and patterns while creating heart-themed artwork.
  • Recycled Tropical Fish: This Earth Day-themed project encourages students to use recycled materials to create art, promoting environmental awareness.
  • Winter Tree Silhouette Art Project: This project focuses on creating silhouettes of winter trees, exploring negative space and contrasting values.
  • Winter Folk Art Trees: This project introduces students to folk art traditions while creating tree-themed artwork.
  • Portrait Drawing: Students learn to draw portraits, studying artists like Pablo Picasso and exploring different portrait styles, from realistic to abstract.
  • 3D Line Sculptures: This project involves creating three-dimensional sculptures using only lines, encouraging students to think spatially and explore different materials.
  • Balloon Dog Sketches: Inspired by Jeff Koons's iconic balloon dog sculptures, this project involves sketching balloon animals, focusing on form and line.
  • Self-Portraits: Students create self-portraits, exploring different mediums and techniques to express their individuality.
