United States 8th Grade Social Studies Syllabus

Course Description: This course explores key events and concepts in United States history, from the colonial period through the 20th century. Students will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing primary and secondary sources, engaging in discussions, and completing projects.

Units of Study:

1. Foundations of American History:

  • Colonial America: Exploration, settlement, and the development of distinct regional identities.
  • The American Revolution: Causes, key figures, major battles, and the impact of the war. Activities may include analyzing primary source documents, creating timelines, and participating in debates.
  • The Constitution: The framing and ratification of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the principles of American government. Activities may include mock trials, debates, and creating presentations.

2. Expansion and Reform:

  • Westward Expansion: Manifest Destiny, the Louisiana Purchase, the impact on Native Americans, and the challenges of westward migration. Activities may include map projects, research presentations, and simulated journeys.
  • The Civil War: Causes, key figures, major battles, and the impact of the war on American society. Activities may include analyzing primary source documents, creating timelines, and participating in debates.

3. Industrialization and the Great Depression:

  • The Industrial Revolution: Technological advancements, the rise of industry, and the social and economic consequences. Activities may include research projects, presentations, and simulations.
  • The Great Depression: Causes, impact on American society, and the government's response. Activities may include analyzing primary source documents, creating presentations, and participating in simulations.

4. Civil Rights and Social Change:

  • The Civil Rights Movement: The struggle for equality, key figures, major events, and the impact of the movement on American society. Activities may include analyzing primary source documents, creating presentations, and participating in discussions.

Assessment:

Student progress will be assessed through a variety of methods, including class participation, quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, and written assignments.
