Uruguay Bachillerato Diversificado - Biology Option

The Bachillerato Diversificado (BD) in Uruguay is the upper secondary education track preparing students for university. Within the BD, the Biology option provides a foundation for scientific studies, particularly in health and life sciences. It consists of two years of study (5th and 6th year) following four years of general secondary education.

5th Year (First Year of BD - Biology Option)

This year focuses on core subjects and introduces specialized courses related to the Biology option.

Core Subjects:

  • Literature: Focuses on literary analysis and critical thinking. (4 hours/week)
  • Mathematics: Covers fundamental mathematical concepts and problem-solving. (5 hours/week)
  • English: Develops English language proficiency. (3 hours/week)
  • Civic Education: Explores citizenship, rights, and responsibilities. (3 hours/week)
  • Philosophy: Introduces philosophical concepts and critical thinking. (3 hours/week)

Biology Diversification Subjects:

  • Physics: Introduces fundamental physics concepts. (4 hours/week)
  • Chemistry: Covers basic chemical principles. (4 hours/week)
  • Biology: Explores fundamental biological concepts and processes. (5 hours/week)
  • Visual Communication: Develops visual communication skills. (3 hours/week)

6th Year (Second Year of BD - Biology Options)

This year allows students to specialize further within the Biology stream by choosing one of two options: "Ciencias Biológicas" (Biological Sciences) or "Ciencias Agrarias" (Agrarian Sciences).

Core Subjects:

  • Philosophy: Further exploration of philosophical concepts. (3 hours/week)
  • Literature: Continued literary analysis and critical thinking. (3 hours/week)
  • English: Continued development of English language proficiency. (3 hours/week)
  • Social and Economic Studies: Covers social and economic principles. (2 hours/week)

Ciencias Biológicas Option (6th Year):

  • Physics I: Builds upon 5th-year physics, introducing more advanced concepts. (5 hours/week)
  • Mathematics: Advanced mathematical concepts and their application in biology. (6 hours/week)
  • Chemistry: Expands on 5th-year chemistry, covering organic and inorganic chemistry relevant to biological systems. (6 hours/week)
  • Biology: In-depth study of biological systems, including cell biology, genetics, and ecology. (6 hours/week)

Ciencias Agrarias Option (6th Year):

  • Physics I: Similar to the Biological Sciences option, but with a focus on applications in agriculture. (5 hours/week)
  • Mathematics: Focuses on mathematical concepts relevant to agricultural sciences. (6 hours/week)
  • Chemistry: Emphasis on the chemical processes relevant to agriculture and the environment. (6 hours/week)
  • Biology: Study of plant biology, botany, and related agricultural applications. (4 hours/week)
  • Natural Resources and Agrarian Landscape: Explores the management and conservation of natural resources in agricultural contexts. (2 hours/week)
