Uruguay Primary English Language Curriculum
Primary education in Uruguay is compulsory and free in public schools. English language instruction is a part of the curriculum, particularly in urban schools. As of 2023, 91% of urban schools in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades offered English classes, with approximately 65% of students learning English.
A key initiative for English language learning is the Ceibal en Inglés program. This program, a collaboration with the British Council, utilizes videoconferencing technology to deliver remote English classes to students in grades 4-6 (ages 9-12). The program aims to improve English teaching standards, promote intercultural understanding, and address the shortage of English teachers. Ceibal en Inglés provides a detailed syllabus, lesson plans, and digital and non-digital learning materials. It has been running for over 10 years and has reached a significant number of students in Uruguayan public schools.
