Learning Objectives

The primary objectives of the Vietnamese Language curriculum in Grade 2 are to:

  • Character Development: Cultivate essential qualities such as love for nature, family, and homeland; awareness of origins; appreciation for beauty, goodness, and healthy emotions; enthusiasm for learning and labor; honesty and straightforwardness in study and life; and awareness of responsibilities towards oneself, family, society, and the environment.
  • Competency Development: Develop general competencies and enhance language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students should be able to read accurately and fluently, understand main content and information, relate and compare beyond the text, write with correct spelling and grammar, compose sentences, paragraphs, and short essays (narrative and descriptive), speak clearly, and comprehend speakers' opinions.
  • Literature Proficiency: Develop literature proficiency by distinguishing poetry from stories, understanding how to read both forms, recognizing the beauty of literary language, possessing imagination, and understanding and appreciating the beauty and goodness in people and the world expressed in literary texts.

Competency Requirements

Language Proficiency:

  • Reading: Read accurately, fluently, and expressively; comprehend the main content, including both explicit and implicit information like themes and lessons.
  • Writing: Write with correct spelling, vocabulary, and grammar; compose sentences and short paragraphs recounting stories, events, and descriptions; express feelings and thoughts; and write various text types (self-descriptions, messages, invitations, etc.) while understanding the basic writing process.
  • Speaking: Clearly present ideas and emotions; use appropriate gestures; recount stories; share feelings, attitudes, and thoughts; and explain objects or simple processes.
  • Listening: Listen and understand with an appropriate attitude; grasp the main content; recognize the speaker's emotions; and respond to what was heard.

Literature Proficiency:

  • Differentiate between stories and poems; recognize content and author's attitudes; understand the effects of literary elements (language, characters, plot, rhyme, etc.); and relate, imagine, and express literary ideas.
  • Identify the subject of the text, characters in stories, and rhymes in poems.
