Vietnam Primary School Grade 5 Curriculum - Foreign Language

Foreign Language (English)

English is introduced in Vietnamese primary schools as a compulsory subject starting from Grade 3. The curriculum aims to equip students with basic communication skills and provide a foundation for further English language learning. The implementation of the English curriculum in primary schools faces several challenges, including large class sizes, mixed-level classes, heavy teacher workloads, limited class time, and a gap between policy goals and the implementation reality. Additional challenges include outdated textbooks, a lack of learning facilities and reference materials, teacher shortages, and inconsistencies in pre-service teacher training. Studies have explored teacher agency in adapting teaching methods within the new general education curriculum. One example of a Grade 5 English lesson focuses on the question "How Did You Get There?". Other resources for Vietnamese students learning English include bilingual readings and storybooks.

Other Foreign Languages

While English is the primary foreign language taught, some schools offer other foreign languages as options, such as Mandarin, Japanese, or French. French, Japanese, and Chinese are among the popular choices after English.
