Vietnamese Language and Literature (Grades 8-9)
This course covers the Vietnamese language and its literature, focusing on developing language skills and literary analysis. The curriculum is based on the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) guidelines.
Grade 8
Vietnamese Language Knowledge:
- Idioms and proverbs: Understanding the meaning of common idioms and proverbs.
- Nuances of words and word choice: Developing sensitivity to word nuances and appropriate word selection.
- Onomatopoeic and mimetic words: Identifying and understanding the characteristics and effects of onomatopoeic and mimetic words.
Sino-Vietnamese elements: Understanding the meaning of common Sino-Vietnamese elements and words containing them (e.g., vo, hữu*).
- Particles and interjections: Identifying and understanding the characteristics and functions of particles and interjections.
- Independent components in sentences: Identifying and understanding the characteristics and functions of independent components in sentences.
- Sentence types: Understanding the characteristics and functions of declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences, as well as affirmative and negative sentences.
- Rhetorical devices: Identifying and analyzing the effects of rhetorical devices like inversion and rhetorical questions.
- Sentence meanings: Distinguishing between explicit and implicit meanings of sentences.
- Paragraph types: Understanding the characteristics and functions of inductive, deductive, parallel, and coordinated paragraphs.
- Text types and genres: Identifying and analyzing different types and genres of texts, including narrative, expressive, argumentative, and informational texts.
- Vocabulary: Understanding the functions and values of common and regional vocabulary.
- Social dialects: Understanding the functions and values of social dialects.
- Non-verbal communication: Understanding the use of non-verbal communication tools such as images, figures, and charts.
Literature Knowledge:
- Imagination in literary works: Exploring the role of imagination in literature.
- Titles and titling techniques: Understanding different ways to title texts.
- Themes and topics: Identifying and analyzing themes and topics in literary works.
- Plot, context, characters, language: Analyzing these elements in stories, including historical stories.
- Plot types: Distinguishing between single-threaded and multi-threaded plots.
- Satirical poetry: Understanding the main artistic techniques of satirical poetry.
- Poetic law: Understanding elements of poetic law in seven-word eight-line poems and four-line poems of the Tang Dynasty.
- Formal elements of poetry: Analyzing formal elements such as words, images, composition, and emotional flow.
- Literary scripts (comedies): Analyzing conflict, actions, characters, dialogues, and satirical techniques in comedies.
- Free verse: Understanding formal elements of free verse.
- Reader response: Understanding the concept of individual reader responses to literary texts.
- Author's perspectives: Analyzing the author's perspectives on life and humans.
- Literary materials: Engaging with various literary texts, including humorous stories, short stories, historical stories, satirical poetry, seven-word eight-line poems, four-line poems of the Tang Dynasty, six and seven-syllable poems, comedies, social arguments, literary arguments, explanatory texts on natural phenomena, book introductions, and petitions.
Grade 9
Vietnamese Language Knowledge:
- Sino-Vietnamese elements: Differentiating between the meanings of easily confusing Sino-Vietnamese elements.
- Literary allusions and classical references: Understanding the characteristics and effects of literary allusions and classical references.
- Abbreviations: Understanding the meaning and usage of abbreviations of important international organizations.
- Sentence structure: Understanding the transformation and expansion of sentence structure.
- Sentence types: Choosing between simple and compound sentences, understanding types of compound sentences and conjunctions.
- Elliptical and special sentences: Understanding the characteristics and functions of elliptical and special sentences.
- Rhetorical devices: Understanding the characteristics and effects of rhetorical devices such as punning, sound repetition, and rhyming.
- Direct and indirect speech: Differentiating between direct and indirect speech and understanding the use of punctuation.
- Text types and literary genres: Analyzing different text types and literary genres, including narrative, expressive, argumentative, and informative texts.
- Referencing and citing: Understanding how to reference and cite materials to avoid plagiarism.
- Language development: Exploring new words and new meanings.
- Vietnamese writing: Developing a basic understanding of Vietnamese writing systems, including Nom script and Quoc Ngu script.
- Non-verbal communication: Understanding the use of non-verbal communication means such as images, numerical data, and diagrams.
Literature Knowledge:
Literary materials: Engaging with various literary texts, including mythical tales, detective stories, verse forms like song thất lục bát*, Nom narrative poetry, eight-syllable poetry, tragedies, social arguments, literary arguments, texts introducing scenic spots or historical sites, and interview articles. |
