Vietnam Lower Secondary Curriculum (Grades 8-9) - Music

Music is a compulsory subject in Vietnamese lower secondary schools (grades 6-9), as part of the national curriculum. The 2018 General Education Curriculum introduced reforms aimed at enhancing students' qualities and abilities through fundamental subjects, including music. It emphasizes developing musical competence through singing, playing instruments, and understanding musical elements. The curriculum aims to connect students' creative, physical, and intellectual abilities while teaching them about artistic and historical aspects of music.

Key aspects of the curriculum seem to include:

  • Singing: Developing vocal skills and performance techniques.
  • Musical Ability Development: Training in rhythm, melody, harmony, and other musical elements.
  • Solfege: Sight-reading and musical notation.

Assessment methods may include grades and comments, and a variety of assessment practices are used to evaluate learning and plan next steps.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) plays a central role in curriculum development and implementation. Initiatives like the recorder cooperation program aim to integrate contemporary music culture into the curriculum. Yamaha has also partnered with MOET on instrumental music education programs. Some schools offer integrated programs that align with the MOET curriculum while incorporating Vietnamese cultural identity into music education.
