Vietnam Grade 10 Literature Curriculum

Compulsory Subjects and Educational Activities:

Literature is a compulsory subject for Grade 10 students in Vietnam, as outlined in Section 3 of the General Education Program (Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT). Other compulsory subjects and educational activities include Mathematics, a Foreign Language, Civic Education, History and Geography, Natural Sciences, Technology, Informatics, Physical Education, Arts (Music and Fine Arts), Experiential Activities, Vocational Orientation, and Local Educational Content. Elective subjects include Ethnic Minority Languages and a second Foreign Language. Students choose four elective subjects.

Grade 10 Literature Content (Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT):

The Grade 10 Literature curriculum covers Vietnamese language knowledge and literary knowledge, using various materials like literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts.

Vietnamese Language Knowledge:

This section focuses on identifying and correcting errors in word usage, word order, and paragraph/text cohesion. Students learn about rhetorical devices (e.g., insertion, enumeration), text styles and genres (argumentative, informational), and non-linguistic communication means (e.g., images, charts, diagrams). Specific skills developed include analyzing arguments, evaluating literary works, writing personal reflection essays, understanding news reporting, interpreting regulations and guidance, and using citations and footnotes.

Literary Knowledge:

This section explores the main inspiration of literary works, narrative perspectives (third-person omniscient, first-person limited), elements of epic and mythological stories (space, time, plot, narrator, character, narrative tone), aesthetic value of formal features in poetry, elements of traditional folk opera (cheo), historical and cultural contexts of works, and the relationship between literary works and readers. Basic knowledge about Nguyen Trai is included to aid in understanding his works. The curriculum also explores content similarities between literary works from different cultures.

Materials:

The curriculum utilizes various materials, including:

  • Literary texts: Myths, folk poetry, short stories, novels, lyric poetry, and traditional folk opera scripts.
  • Argumentative texts: Literary criticism and social commentary.
  • Informational texts: Research reports, explanatory texts, regulations, and guidance texts.

Student Age:

According to Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, the typical entry age for Grade 10 is 15. However, adjustments may be made for students who skipped grades, entered school late, are ethnic minorities, have disabilities, are in difficult circumstances, or are returning from abroad (up to 3 years older than the stipulated age). Students can be retained in a grade a maximum of three times within a single educational level.
