Zambia Grade 1 Social Studies Syllabus

This syllabus aims to develop learners' understanding of their social, cultural, spiritual, and moral environment. It encourages the development of essential life skills and values, preparing learners for responsible citizenship. The syllabus follows an Outcome Based Education approach, emphasizing practical application of knowledge and skills.

General Outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of political, social, economic, cultural, environmental, and civic issues.
  • Develop an understanding of spiritual and moral values.

Key Competences

  • Ability to work in a group.
  • Ability to identify the four cardinal points of the compass.
  • Demonstrate safe ways of crossing the road and rail line.
  • Ability to pray.

Topics

1. Living Together in the Community

  • Home and School: Identifying important places around the home and school (e.g., shops, post office, market, church, clinic, police post). Identifying family members and their relationships to each other. Understanding roles played in the home (e.g., cooking, cleaning, gardening). Explaining the need for rules at home and school. Exploring ways to work together in class.

2. Direction and Location

  • Basic Cardinal Points: Identifying the four basic cardinal points (North, South, East, West).

3. Governance

  • National Anthem: Singing the National Anthem.

4. Religion

  • Names of God: Learning different names of God.
  • Importance of God: Understanding the importance of God as Creator, Provider, Sustainer, and Healer.
  • Prayer: Exploring different ways people talk to God and reasons for prayer. Learning different types of prayers (e.g., for help, thanksgiving, protection) and reciting the Lord's Prayer. Understanding different times when people pray and how God answers prayers.

5. Christian Living

  • Friendship and Love: Understanding qualities of a good friend (e.g., honesty, trust, respect, care, faithfulness). Learning stories of Jesus' friendship towards children. Identifying good things God gives to people (e.g., life, water, air, sunlight, food, parents, protection). Demonstrating the story of the Good Samaritan and understanding its message of love and friendship. Exploring different ways of helping others.

6. Transport and Communication

  • Types of Transport and Communication: Identifying types of transport and their roles in moving people and goods. Exploring different ways of communicating among people.
  • Importance of Transport and Communication: Understanding the importance of transport for easier and quicker movement and facilitating the movement of goods and services. Understanding the importance of communication for sharing information.
  • Safety: Demonstrating the correct side of the road to walk along. Demonstrating safe ways of crossing the road and rail line.
