Zambia Grade 10 Commerce Syllabus

1. Commerce

  • Aids to Trade: This topic covers the importance of commerce and various aids to trade, including banking, insurance, communication, transport, warehousing, and advertising. Students will learn how these aids facilitate trade and contribute to economic development.
  • Career Prospects: This section explores various career opportunities within the field of commerce, such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and management roles.

2. Production

  • Needs and Wants: This topic differentiates between needs and wants and their role in driving economic activity.
  • Methods of Production: Students will learn about direct and indirect methods of production and the different sectors involved, such as industry, direct services, and commerce.
  • Factors of Production: This section covers the factors involved in production, including land, labor, capital, and enterprise/organization. It also describes different types of goods, including original, counterfeit, substandard, and quality goods.

3. Contracts

  • Elements of a Valid Simple Contract: This topic introduces the concept of contracts and outlines the essential elements required for a contract to be legally binding, including offer, acceptance, and consideration. It also distinguishes between an invitation to treat and an offer.

4. Home Trade

  • Retail Trade: This section covers the functions, characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of retailers, both small and large scale. Factors to consider when setting up a retail business are also discussed.
  • Wholesale Trade: This topic explores the different types of wholesalers, their functions, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Documents Used in Home Trade: Students will learn about various documents used in home trade, including enquiry notes, quotations/catalogues, order forms, invoices, debit notes, credit notes, dispatch notes, advice notes, delivery notes, cash sale slips, statements of account, proforma invoices, cheques, and receipts. Students will also learn how to calculate cash and trade discounts.

5. Buying and Selling on Credit

  • Methods: This section covers different methods of buying and selling on credit, including hire purchase, credit sales agreements, and deferred payments. It also distinguishes between hire purchase and credit sale.
  • Consumer Protection: This topic explores the reasons for consumer protection and identifies organizations involved in protecting consumers, such as the government, Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). It also mentions the role of legislature and consumer associations.
