Zambia Grade 10 Geography Syllabus

This syllabus outlines the subject matter for Geography in Grade 10, focusing on map work and elements of physical geography. It is based on the 2013 Zambian syllabus produced by the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC).

Section A: Map Work

  • Topic 10.1: Map Work: Basic Techniques and Skills
      • Sub-topic 10.1.1: Map Reading and Interpretation: This sub-topic covers matching conventional signs with ground features, measuring real distances, translating map distances into real distances, computing gradient (slope), identifying relief features and drainage patterns using contour lines, identifying factors influencing human settlements and activities, identifying vegetation and land-use types, and accounting for observed vegetation and land-use patterns.
      • Sub-topic 10.1.2: Sketch Maps and Diagrams: This sub-topic focuses on drawing sketch maps from topographic maps and drawing cross-sections between two points on a map.

Section B: Elements of Physical Geography

  • Topic 10.2: The Solar System: This topic covers the description of the solar system, the Earth as a planet, latitude and longitude, local and standard time, the International Date Line, the apparent movement of the sun (angle of elevation), and the rotation and revolution of the Earth.
  • Topic 10.3: Earth Movements: This topic explores faulting and folding, earthquakes and volcanic activities, including their origins, types, resulting landforms, effects on the environment and people, and distribution.
  • Topic 10.4: Weathering and Mass Wasting: This topic examines the processes of weathering in tropical and temperate regions, agents of weathering, and processes of mass movement or mass wasting.
  • Topic 10.5: River Processes: This topic covers river systems and drainage patterns, stages in the formation of a river, associated features of each stage, processes of river erosion, transportation and deposition, erosional and depositional features, and the importance of rivers.
  • Topic 10.6: Weather and Climate: This topic describes the formation, structure, and effects of tropical and temperate storms, major climatic types and their characteristics.
  • Topic 10.7: Vegetation: This topic explains the characteristics of natural vegetation and their adaptation to different environments.
  • Topic 10.8: Natural Environmental Hazards: This topic describes natural environmental hazards, the impact of human activities on the physical environment, effects of hazards on people and the environment, and possible solutions to natural environmental hazards. It also assesses the impact of climate change on the environment.
