Zambia Grade 8 Integrated Science Syllabus - Course Entries
This syllabus integrates Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, emphasizing learner-centered teaching and the development of scientific thinking skills.
The syllabus covers the following units:
1. The Human Body: This unit explores the human reproductive system, puberty, fertilization, and embryo development. Students learn to identify reproductive organs, explain their functions, and describe the changes associated with puberty. The importance of personal hygiene is also emphasized.
2. Health: This unit focuses on nutrition and the dietary needs of different individuals. Students learn about different types of food nutrients, dietary deficiency diseases, and the importance of children's clinics.
3. The Environment: This unit covers water, air, and land pollution. Students identify different types of pollution, their causes and effects, and ways to prevent pollution. The emphasis is on conserving resources through the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
4. Plants and Animals: This unit explores plant and animal cells, plant growth and nutrients, and the structure of animal cells. Students learn to use a microscope, identify regions of plant growth, and investigate how plants obtain nutrients. The advantages and disadvantages of inorganic and organic fertilizers are also discussed.
5. Materials and Energy: This unit covers the composition of matter, physical changes of state, mixtures, mass and weight, density, heat transfer, expansion of substances, reflection and refraction of light, and the composition of air. Students learn about atoms, molecules, and the properties of different substances. They also conduct experiments to investigate these concepts.
