Zambia Grade 1 Mathematics Syllabus
1. Numbers and Notation
- Recognize, count, read, and write numbers from 1 to 100 (including the meaning of zero).
- Interpret numbers using ten as a unit (e.g., 12 is 10 and 2).
- Order numbers in terms of magnitude.
- Count in tens up to 100.
2. Sets
- Sort objects according to size, color, and shape.
- Match sets into one-to-one correspondence.
- Place sets in order according to their cardinal numbers.
- Assign numerals 0 to 10 to elements in a set.
- Use cardinal and ordinal numbers in everyday life.
3. Addition
- Add whole numbers with sums up to 100.
- Complete addition of number sentences.
- Apply addition to real-life situations up to 100 (for money, do not use Ngwee as a fraction of Kwacha at this stage).
4. Subtraction
- Subtract whole numbers up to 100.
- Develop the concept of zero as a difference.
- Complete subtraction of number sentences.
- Apply subtraction to real-life situations up to 100.
- Carry out shopping activities involving money (do not use Ngwee as a fraction of Kwacha at this stage).
5. Number Patterns
- Identify number patterns involving addition and subtraction up to 100.
6. Plane Shapes
- Recognize squares, circles, rectangles, and triangles.
- Trace outlines of squares, circles, rectangles, and triangles.
- Make pictures using shapes of squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles.
7. Measures
- Identify times of the day.
- Tell days of the week.
- Name months of the year.
- Compare lengths of different objects.
